Statistics for motor vehicle accidents show good and bad signs

When heading out on the road in Ohio, there is always a chance that an accident may occur. Because the roads can be dangerous, researchers conduct studies to assess collisions and determine strategies to make the roads safer. Still, with the seemingly endless litany of causes of motor vehicle accidents, they will continue to happen. People who have been hurt or suffered the loss of a loved one in a car crash must consider the future and think about a legal filing for compensation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released its statistics for road fatalities. In 2018, there were 36,550 fatalities on the nation's roadways, which was a 2.4% drop from 2017. Children were also safer on the road, with those age 14 and under seeing a 10% drop in deaths. However, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 3.4%, with 6,677 fatalities. Bicyclists are also showing an increased vulnerability, with a 6.3% increase in deaths.

Researchers are struggling to determine the cause of these increases. Distracted driving is one cause, but it was cited as a factor in only 7.8% of fatal accidents in 2018. SUVs and crossovers have become more popular and their size can do more damage in a collision, especially with a pedestrian. Another potential cause of accident is road design and the fact that drivers, cyclists and pedestrians must often share the road.

Regardless of the type of accident, the aftermath can cause significant problems for the victim and their family in myriad ways. Financially, there can be huge medical costs. People can lose the ability to contribute to their family in a meaningful way and their injuries could leave them unable to perform the most basic tasks. After a motor vehicle accident, the investigation is vital to a legal filing. A law firm experienced in these cases might be able to help analyze the case and take the necessary steps to move forward with a claim.
